Movember raises over $7.7million

12/18/2009
This Movember - the month formerly known as November - men got hairy and surpassed all fundraising expectations.

January 28, 2010 — Movember, the month formerly known as November, is proud to share that more than 35,000 Canadians across the country  joined the movement by growing a Mo (slang for moustache) and supporting men’s health issues.  This year more than $7.7 million has been raised for Prostate Cancer Canada (with funds continuing to pour in), far exceeding the initial $4 million goal.

"This has been such an incredible year for Movember - we more than exceeded our goals for registrants and funds raised, and we also saw participation from St. John’s to Vancouver Island,” said Movember Co-Founder and CEO Adam Garone.  “It was amazing to see so many Mo Bros and Mo Sistas get on board and engage their families, friends, colleagues and communities to be a part of the Movember movement.  We can’t wait to see what Movember 2010 will bring.”

Movember is a month long fundraising campaign where male participants, known as Mo Bros, start the month of November with a clean shaven face, then grow their stylish moustache throughout the month. This hairy ribbon is designed to help men start conversations about prostate cancer and make it easier for them to discuss this, so called, ‘uncomfortable’ topic.  Women or Mo Sistas, aren’t left out. They can help by getting the word out, recruiting Mo Bros to participate and collecting donations for Prostate Cancer Canada.

“We are so pleased with the success of Movember and the awareness that has been raised about prostate cancer in Canada,” said Steve Jones, President and CEO, Prostate Cancer Canada. “Thanks to the thousands of Mo Bro’s and Sista’s who participated in a record year for Movember. The money raised will go to much needed research, and will create more awareness around prostate cancer, which afflicts one in six Canadian men in their lifetime.”

Since its inception in 2003, Movember has raised over $51 million (CAD) globally, and is continuously working to increase awareness of prostate cancer within the community and change the attitude men have about their health.  Movember is the world’s biggest event supporting men’s health.

This year’s Canadian Movember campaign was sponsored by Canadian Club, Dermalogica, smart Canada, and WAHL.
