RSM Richter commits $150,000 to Prostate Cancer Canada

Funds to support innovative Canadian BRCA 1/2 Prostate Cancer Network and the fight against the most common cancer to afflict Canadian men.

TORONTO, April 19, 2010 – RSM Richter is donating $150,000 towards the Canadian BRCA 1/2 Prostate Cancer Network, a new research initiative led by Prostate Cancer Canada. This national collaborative network will pull together expertise from five leading prostate cancer research institutions – University of British Columbia, SunnybrookHospital, PrincessMargaretHospital, McGill University (CUSM) and Université de Montreal (CHUM) – to collect data on male carriers of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 gene mutations. These men are at risk of aggressive prostate cancer.

Studies have shown that these gene mutations lead to a highly increased risk of breast cancer in women. Early work has indicated that male relatives of these women have a higher susceptibility to developing prostate cancer – up to a 22-fold greater risk.

“RSM Richter is proud to be supporting Prostate Cancer Canada with a multi-year commitment toward the Canadian BRCA 1 / 2 Prostate Cancer Network,” said David Steinberg, co-managing partner of the Toronto office. “Prostate cancer is a cause that is close to the hearts of our employees and clients, so it is important for us to be involved with such a worthy initiative.”

In Montreal, RSM Richter Chamberland managing partner Stephen Rosenhek stated: “We are pleased that the firm is joining this cause on a national level. Together, we hope to make a real difference in the fight against cancer.”

The project will benefit from the input of experts in the field of genomic counseling and surgical, radiation and medical oncology. The expected results will inform new approaches to disease
prevention and treatment through early genetic assessment.

“RSM Richter’s generous contribution will help support important work in genetic sequencing for the BRCA 1 /2 mutation,” said Steve Jones, President and CEO of Prostate Cancer Canada. “Only through this genetic sequencing and collaboration will clinicians be able to identify enough patients to form a database for further research and trials. We greatly appreciate RSM Richter’s support in making this important research possible.”
